Although it shouldn't come as a surprise, super-publisher Activision/Blizzard has once again injected some much-needed mojo into the veins of a somewhat anemic PC gaming market with the second expansion of their ground-breaking World of Warcraft franchise, Wrath of the Lich King . While direct comparisons of software sales to the console market would suggest little interest in the world of keyboard + mouse gaming, the world's most successful PC gaming developer has once again demonstrated that if you build it, they will come. Since its November 13th release date, Blizzard's update to their online universe had broken expectations and records to become the fastest-selling PC game of all time.
In just 24 hours of its availability, Wrath of the Lich King has sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide. Despite some retailers (and gas stations) breaking the official street date, it seems most players decided to wait and joined the throngs of passionate fans, faithfully picking up full copies of the subscription-based expansion. This total soundly bests the previous record-holder, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade's 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours by a full 400,000 copies. Blizzard's latest has already become the best-selling PC game of 2008, clearly demonstrating the unending demand for online adventures will continue as long as the quality is there.
