No games topped 100,000 units this week. But PSP had a few games which topped 50,000 units. Hardware sales for Japan this week fell into 3 sales tiers: DS & PSP, Wii & PS3, PS2 & 360.

Jacob Mazel

Summary:

It was a fairly quiet week in Japan for software considering the hullabaloo of late February and the first three weeks of March. The big news for the week is that only one PS3 title charted in the preliminary data. When Musou Orochi Z joins Resident Evil 5, Demon Souls, Street Fighter IV below the 15,000 unit per week barrier the PS3 will be largely dependent on the Final Fantasy XIII demo-bundle to spike sales in April. The Wii continues to have a steady stream of small games released for it, keeping hardware sales at ~20,000 per week, while the Xbox 360 continues to drop until its next wave of software arrives. The DS and PSP moved closer to each other this week on new PSP software and falling DS sales after the new colors launched last week.

Trends to Watch:

-
Monster Hunter G has begun to see a more rapid rise in preorders over the past couple of days in Japan. The game includes a demo of Monster Hunter 3 which should theoretically allow Wii to see a spike right after the Final Fantasy XIII demo releases.
-
After a pretty good run, the Xbox 360 now appears destined for a relatively long run beneath the pace of the aging PS2 in Japan once again. At some point, you have to figure Microsoft will announce its next wave to maintain some level of momentum for Xbox 360 in Japan.
-
DS should top 1m units in Japan this week, putting the portable on pace – by months anyway - for another ~4m unit year in Japan.

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platform market share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending March 29, 2009.

Software by Platform:

Wii Software – Only two Wii games charted in the preliminary data. The new Suzumiya Haurhi came in at 15,000 units in its debut. Also charting was Taiko no Tatsujin with sales of 13,000 units for the week. Next week, Winning Post World starts what should be a period of greater software sales for Wii, with Muramasa, Monster Hunter G, Deca Sporta 2, and Powerful Pro Baseball 2009 (as opposed to the recently released Powerful Pro Baseball Next) releasing in April. For this week, expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the 17,000 to 22,000 unit range.

Resident Evil 5 will likely end up at 8,000 to 15,000 units for the week in the final data, but in our early data the game is sold out. Expect PS3 hardware sales to drop into the 16,000 to 24,000 unit range as the push from Resident Evil 5 begins to dry up.
