Summary:

This is the week of launches we’ve all beenwaiting for: The DSi, Little Big Planet, and the two versions of GrandTheft Auto IV. In reality, there was also a high profile DS release toaccompany the hardware refresh, Valkyrie Profile. Grand Theft Auto IValso looks like it is a much more important title in Japan than LittleBig Planet, as even the Xbox 360 version of the game nearly outsold thePS3 exclusive. Nonetheless, the mini runs of PSP and Xbox 360 overtheir rivals – DS and PS3 – appear to be over in Japan on the newreleases for the week. Future weeks should be interesting as well, withAnimal Crossing, Chrono Trigger, Mobile Suit Gundam, Last Remnant, andWhite Knight Story likely to provide small to substantial hardwareboosts for their respective platforms based on historical and preorderdata.

Key Points:

  SoftwareSales topped 600,000 units this week in the preliminary data, anincrease in volume of over 100,000 units from the previous week.

  TheDSi launch, like the PSP 3000 launch before it, does not appear to haveelevated older software significantly. However, as of November 2, theDSi had only been available for two days, so it is a bit early to judgeyet.

  GTA4is actually the top debut for a PS3 game since Metal Gear Solid 4released back in mid June to sales of over 450,000 units. That droughtgoes a long way to explaining PS3 sales at ~4,000 in recent weeks

Understanding the Japanese Preview:

Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending November 2, 2008.

Software by Platform Breakdown:

Wii Software – WiiMusic and an Animal game (not that Animal game) from Marvelous were theonly Wii titles to chart this week. The Animal title debuted to salesof 10,000 units while Wii Music dropped to 26,000 units. Holiday sales,which were very kind to Wii Fit last year, should largely determinewhether Wii Music can join the holy trinity of Wii ___ million sellinggames in Japan (Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports). Animal Crossing,debuting later in November, should have no issues hitting 1 millionunits, as the title sold nearly 1 million even on Game Cube, and standsat 5m on DS just in Japan. Expect Wii hardware sales to remain in the20,000 to 30,000 unit range this week.

PS3 Software – Grand Theft Auto IV is easily thebest PS3 debut in months in Japan. The game sold nearly 130,000 unitsin its first week, meaning about 1 in 20 PS3 owners in Japan bought itweek one. Little Big Planet had a good debut too, but excluding thehardware bundles, the game sold about 55,000 units. With the holidaysapproaching, the game should top 100,000 units easily, but gettingbeyond 150,000 units is a bit of a long shot at this point. Expect PS3hardware sales to rise into the 15,000 to 25,000 unit range this week,on the GTA and the Little Big Planet hardware bundle-boost.

Xbox 360 Software – Grand Theft Auto IV alsocharted on Xbox 360, at about 40,000 units. Expect Xbox 360 hardwaresales to rise into the 8,000 to 12,000 unit range on the GTA debut.

PS2 Software – PS2 continues to be a gold mine forniche hits. Four niche titles charted in the preliminary data for PS2,with Thunder Force VI topping out at about 10,000 units for the week.Expect PS2 hardware sales to remain in the 5,000 to 9,000 unit range.

PSP Software – PSP software remains fairly low.Only three titles charted. One was a cheaper edition of Monster HunterPortable 2G. The other two games were Yuusha no Kuse and Macross AceFrontier. Looking ahead, the next big release will be Mobile SuitGundam: Gundam vs. Gundam later in the month. Expect PSP hardware salesto continue falling this week on both the DSi launch, and the growingdistance (by time) from the PSP 3000 launch, into the 45,000 to 65,000unit range.

DS Software – Eight DS titles charted this week,seven of which sold over 10,000 units. Valkyrie Profile was the topseller and it was clearly launched to take advantage of the DSi hoopla.It came in at about 121,000 units although there is some evidence thisfigure could be as low as 80,000 given some shipment irregularities inthe DSi launch. Rhythm Heaven Gold, Wagamama Fashion and PokemonPlatinum continued to sell between 20,000 and 40,000 units this week.The new Chocobo game fell into that range as well. Kirby, ChronoTrigger, and Professor Layton should continue pushing DS hardware salesin Japan in the upcoming weeks. For now though, expect DS hardwaresales to sky rocket on the DSi launch, from about 25,000 last week intothe 115,000 to 165,000 unit range.
