Even as PS3 hardware tops 3 million unitsin Japan, the console is very close to getting outsold by Wii onceagain in Japan. DS has returned to the top spot in the Japanese marketthis week.
Jacob Mazel
Summary:
The DS had new colors launch this week alongside anew wave of games. As a result, DS software totals are up significantlyfor the week, lifting total software sales in the preliminary dataabove the levels seen last week. The major push from Street Fighter IV,Resident Evil 5, Yakuza 3, Star Ocean 4, Musou Orochi Z, and DemonSouls on PS3 and Xbox 360 is now over, with only Resident Evil 5 andMusou Orochi Z charting. Until the Final Fantasy XIII demo bundled witha PS3 releases in April alongside Monster Hunter G for Wii, the storywill be how low PS3 and Xbox 360 dip in the wake of their push.
Trends to Watch:
-
Afterjust missing last week, the PS3 should top 3 million units in Japanthis week. In the 124 weeks it will take PS3 to top 3m units, PS1 hadtopped 6.5m units and PS2 had topped 9.5m units in Japan. Still, thePS3 will likely still become the most popular second place home consoleever in Japan.
-
The Wii should return to outselling PS3 either this week (Powerful Pro Baseball Next) or next week (Suzumiya Haruhi).
-
DS,after falling behind PSP for most of 2008, is currently ahead of PSP by45% in 2009. The release of Dragon Quest IX alone should insure that DSoutsells PSP in Japan in 2009 as the title could theoretically sell 4million copies – just in Japan. It will be interesting to see if Sonyhas a response planned for July to counter DQIX.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying xgame for y platform sold between 20,000 and 28,000 units as in thepast, the preliminary data will be broken down into charts by platform.Within these charts, there will two additional categories besides therounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the left will be ‘low end’depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold for the week, whileto the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highest amount the titlelikely sold for the week. As always, this data is preliminary, andtherefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. The varying platformmarket share the sample represents is why consistent sellers like WiiFit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending March 22, 2009.
Software by Platform:
WiiSoftware – Three Wii games charted in the preliminary data. Pikmin 2and legs of iron hit Taiko Wii were joined by Konami’s latest baseballgame Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu Next.
